Music: Rock/Pop Wilderness

On Wilderness' self-titled Jagjaguwar debut, the band's unassuming rhythm section wisely surrenders the spotlight to Colin McCann's deep-echo guitar. His Chameleons-style chimes aren't just reverb-splashed, they're fully submerged. It's the sound of My Morning Jacket if they fell for '80s college rock instead of Neil Young. Wilderness kept the working formula more or less intact for 2006's Vessel States, though singer James Johnson's erratic intonations did begin to sound a little less like John Lydon. Not ones to rush a new record, Wilderness are only now emerging from almost two years in incubation. It's that painstaking attention to detail that sets them apart from the lesser post-punk tomb raiders.
