Music: Rock/Pop The Pogues

The Pogues' enduring take on traditional Irish folk — filtered through Joe Strummer's bark and Keith Richards' health regimen — proved that the spirit of '77 could be all-encompassing. Classic records like Rum, Sodomy & the Lash are so singular, so unmistakably their own, it's a little surprising to see how many pretenders they've inspired. But it makes sense: despite Shane MacGowan's idiosyncratic sense of humor and poetic turns of phrase, the Pogues are nothing if not inclusive. Liberal populists at heart, folkies by sensibility, and drunkards by habit, the Pogues still go down as smooth as a pint of Guinness.
