Music: Global Haru Ichiban: A Musical Breeze from Japan

Not all the music at this festival is light and gentle. Sure, headliner Michiyo Yagi can coax twinkling prettiness from her massive, 17-string koto, but she also dishes out pure punishment when she's playing with Peter Brötzmann, Elliott Sharp, John Zorn, or anyone else from Zorn's Tzadik label. Co-headliner Kiyoshi Fujikawa started off as an avant-garde drummer, but he's lately been obsessed with the West African djembe and electronic music. Other performers over the next four days include shakuhachi player Daiyoshi Kizan, jazz ensemble WaFoo, and taiko drumming group Taikoza.
