Film King Kong (1933)

King Kong's legacy is a study in adaptation as a means of cultural survival. The now-75-year-old ape has undergone two face lifts in order to retain his youthful vigor, and although the beauty-and-the-beast story is a longstanding metaphor for man's triumph over nature — or, rather, the violent rape of nature by the blind aggression of human ambition — each adaptation illustrates the sensibilities and preoccupations of its historical context. To honor Kong's continuing relevance, Film Forum screens the original 1933 film in all its pre-CGI glory.
