Film Green Fish (1997)

This month's Classic Movie Night screens Lee Chang-dong's critical portrait of Korean society, Green Fish. After serving his mandatory stint in the military, a naïve, unnamed soldier (referred to as Makdong, or "youngest sibling") returns to an unrecognizable hometown, family strife, and financial problems. Eventually, fate propels him to work with the local mob. The movie's gangster plot, inevitable love triangle, and conflict with modernization aren't new, but Lee focuses on the everyday, exposing the nature of brutality and capturing a few universal sentiments in the process.
