With Boarding Gate, French director Olivier Assayas abandons Maggie Cheung's wanderings in Paris, breaking away from his nebulous films Irma Vep (1996) and Clean (2004). This dark thriller stars the sulfurous Asia Argento as ex-call girl Sandra, complete with exposed tattoos and see-through underwear. Sandra rekindles a love affair with her pimp Miles and ends up entangled in twisted erotic games and drug deals between London and Hong Kong. Charged with tension, manipulation, and betrayal, the blurry narrative creates an air of malaise that lingers long after the gun smoke has cleared.
