Los Angeles painter Georganne Deen is an icon among West Coast post-punk aesthetes, and well-known to readers of Juxtapoz magazine as a proponent of lyrical dissonance and clear-headed romance. Her paintings, works on paper, and sculptural objects combine a whispery style of draftsmanship with an earthy palette. She takes women and animals as her subject, recasting them in a surreal combination of pop culture and mythology. According to Deen, the title of her latest series — created for her first solo show in New York — refers to a subliminal state of self-awareness and serenity, which she locates and symbolizes through elements of nature.
