In a true hybrid between indie and hip-hop, Why? pit lush production and hyper-poetic wordplay against stringy, washed-out rock guitars, thumping bass, and skewed beats. While the group's new record, Alopecia, is conceptually adventurous, a first (or even second) listen won't immediately reveal the genius of mastermind Yoni Wolf's nasal, half-rapped witticisms. But, as with any slow-burner, by listen four or five the group's smooth-flowing stories of self-described stalkers ("Simeon's Dilemma"), Houdini stomach-punches ("Good Friday"), gypsy knives ("The Hollows"), and horseshoes ("A Sky for Shoeing Horses Under") have become as endearing as they were once inscrutable.
