Music: Rock/Pop Xiu Xiu w/ Thao with the Get Down Stay Down

Whoever called consistency "the hobgoblin of small minds" clearly never heard Xiu Xiu. Women as Lovers is the band's sixth album in a seemingly endless winning streak, and it keeps truck with the band's usual mix of baroque noise and embarrassingly confessional poetry. Of course, there's nothing small about Jamie Stewart's high-wire emotional theatrics: even on the songs in which his delicate baritone doesn't spill over into lacerating anguish, the band's eerie sense of naked drama keeps the stakes raised. So when Xiu Xiu record and support another clockwork mix of OMD synths, gamelan percussion, and hyper-sensitive lyrics, don't shrug it off — just try and think of one other band that sounds anything like them.
