CUNY Graduate Center says…

Legends like Biggie and DJ Premier didn't just have swagger and charisma. They were also great storytellers — whether through rhymes or production. Tonight, cross-cultural industry experts (including rapstress and poet La Bruja, NYU music-manipulation professor Joe Schloss, and urban grassroots activist J-Love) discuss the role these tales play in the music and movement of hip-hop. Sujatha Fernandes, a sociology professor at Queens College and a Mellon fellow at the Center for the Humanities, moderates this provocative look at how storytelling communicates messages to a community.
