Georgia's Drive-By Truckers used last year's Dirt Underneath tour to adjust to their lineup without guitarist Jason Isbell (the ex-husband of bassist Shonna Tucker) and road-test selections from this year's Brighter Than Creation's Dark. By turns quixotic and homespun, the new songs by co-founders Mike Cooley and Patterson Hood complement each other like strands of DNA. BTCD is the first DBT release to feature songs written and sung by Tucker, as well. With longtime pedal-steel player John Neff in the third guitar chair, the record is an unqualified success, mixing songs about the Iraq war with domestic snapshots both calming and grotesque.
