Film New Directors/New Films

There's never a shortage of good film festivals and programs in New York, but the annual New Directors/New Films consistently emerges as the showcase with the most integrity and breadth. With its selection of legitimately indie (read: films not backed by studios or big production companies) and very strong foreign imports, it reminds us of what film can still look like when it's not kowtowing to a financial or ideological bottom line. In particular, check out Lance Hammer's debut feature, Ballast, about a single mother trying to get by in the American South, and wide-angled Jellyfish, about three Tel Aviv women's interlocking lives.

Note: Screenings take place at the Walter Reade Theater and MoMA.
