Asia Society and Museum says…

Red Peony Gambler is the archetypal yakuza film — with one significant difference. Although it's set in the violent Japanese underworld and underpinned by codes of honor and chivalry, the film breaks genre convention by featuring a woman as its protagonist. Played by the stunning Junko Fuji, the titular "Red Peony" uses both sexuality and swordsmanship to avenge her father's murder and redeem her family's reputation as she navigates the male-dominated gangster subculture. Fuji's one-two-punch of feminine grace and relentless brutality led to several subsequent spin-offs, and later inspired Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill films.
