Director Rupert Goold switches out Scottish castles for Soviet regalia in his modern revamping of Macbeth. Patrick Stewart returns to the stage (he was a commanding theatre star for two decades before helming the Enterprise), expertly tracing Macbeth's descent from misguided ambition into paranoid madness. The set and sound design are revelatory: the Three Strange Sisters deliver their toil-and-trouble scene amid military corpses, and Lady Macbeth's seductions are interspersed with future-shock imagery and discomforting industrial noise, ratcheting up the play's already feverish pitch.
