Hopelessness and self-loathing are frequent players in Tennessee Williams' work, and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof is no exception. The weighty issues on display — homosexuality, alcoholism, mental instability — mean it's not the easiest play to digest. But the meaty roles continue to attract top-notch stage actors. In Debbie Allen's all-African American production, the celebrity quotient is high, from Terrence Howard's alcoholic jock to James Earl Jones' coarse Big Daddy. It's only too bad the raucous audience response stems more from the star power than Williams' finely tuned family drama, which takes on a whole new meaning with this superb cast.
