Art Whitney Biennial 2008
-
- Fritz Haeg, Sundown Salon #29: Dancing Convention, 2006, Courtesy Whitney Museum of American Art
For its 74th installment, the Whitney Biennial expands its exhibition space and (lightly) trims its list of contributors. Through March, the Seventh Regiment Armory hosts events and performances in tandem with the Biennial, including a Gang Gang Dance concert and live portrait painting by Ellen Harvey. The exhibition proper fills all but one of the museum's five floors. 2006's theme ("Day for Night") has been abandoned, along with the glitzy, "up-yours" aesthetic of adult adolescence. Instead, curators focus on large-scale installations, disparate materials, and hybrid works. Now squeeze into that elevator — you won't get another chance to turn up your nose until 2010.
