Music: Global Roksonaki: New Sounds from Kazakhstan

Roksonaki update the sounds of their native Kazakhstan, but not by merely slapping on a dance beat. The band from Almaty creates original, spaced-out tunes that, while reverent of the traditional singers that inspire them, also show influences from Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd, and even Western classical music. (The group is currently collaborating with Yo-Yo Ma.) Combining traditional kylkobyz, shankobyz, sazsyrnai, dombra, and throat singing with guitar and drums, the cross-cultural foursome creates some of the most fresh-sounding, understated ethnic pop anywhere. It's likely to trigger some ecstatic "Kumbaya" moments in the audience tonight — but in the best way possible.
