Music: Global Wu Fei

The guzheng is a Chinese zither that has been around for more than 2,000 years but continues to play an important role in contemporary Chinese pop and rock music. Beijing-born composer Wu Fei is a master of the instrument who has become a darling of the Tzadik crowd through her collaborations with Meredith Monk, Ikue Mori, and Elliott Sharp. Her debut album, A Distant Youth — which features cameos by avant-garde mavens Fred Frith, Carla Kihlstedt, and Helge Andreas Norbakken — consists of mostly improvised guzheng-and-vocal compositions that are at times reflective and atmospheric, at others urgent and ecstatic.
