Music: Global Antibalas

Inspired by the Afrobeat movement started by Fela Kuti in the 1970s, Antibalas reach far and wide for musical inspiration, lacing Cuban and West-African rhythms with elements of jazz, funk, and dub. Their massive brass is intricately layered but never too shiny, and their beats are organic and gritty enough to get those dreadlocks a-shaking. The Bushwick-based 12-piece enlisted Tortoise and Stereolab producer John McEntire to record its latest album, Security — its moodiest and strangest to date — but it's Antibalas' live show that's made them a global phenomenon.
