Performing Arts: Theatre Charles Mee's Fire Island

Sitting on floor cushions and deck chairs, the audience provides the stage here, playing an integral role in recreating the relaxed, beachy feel of notoriously eclectic holiday destination Fire Island. The mixed-media performance, combined with the seamless role-swapping of the cast — from actors to musicians and back again — creates an almost hypnotic ambiance. The players weave through the crowd, occasionally cajoling spectators into spontaneous dancing. The resulting explorations of attraction, rejection, and the hedonistic human needs for attention and, ultimately, love make for an unusual yet engaging experience.
