Performing Arts: Theatre Emancipation
The Classical Theatre of Harlem presents Emancipation, a brand-new play by longtime company member Ty Jones. Emancipation tells the story of Nat Turner's historical 19th-century slave rebellion with a surprising amount of dark humor. Staged in the round, Christopher McElroen's visceral production uses old spirituals (sung by the cast) to punctuate entrances and exits to great effect. Occasionally preachy moments are overshadowed by high-octane drama — most notably, when Jones looks each person in the eye and asks, "are you free?" It's a question to be contemplated on the subway ride home.
