Satyagraha comes to the Met following an acclaimed run in London. This new production of Philip Glass' 1979 opera about Gandhi's formative years in Africa is helmed by Phelim McDermott and Julian Crouch, the same team behind the macabre Shockheaded Peter. Peter Gelb, the Met's new general manager, is trying to change the institution's reputation for stuffiness by bringing in new talents like House of Flying Daggers director Zhang Yimou, so McDermott and Crouch's version of Satyagraha, which features "improvisational puppetry" and film projections, fits right in.
