Film A Fugitive from the Past (1965)

A Fugitive from the Past chronicles the rise and fall of a reluctant criminal in late-1940s Japan. Evoking the sentiments of post-war society, the film mashes up several genres — action, drama, crime, romance, thriller — into something akin to a combination of Les Misérables and Crime and Punishment. The titular fugitive is Inukai, a man pursued by an obsessive cop, as well as his own guilt. Director Tomu Uchida composes the narrative with structural and geographic symmetry, building the story's momentum up to inevitable conclusion.
