Asia Society and Museum says…

Battles Without Honor and Humanity is the first of The Yakuza Papers, a five-film series that's been called the "Japanese Godfather." The epic cycle of violence chronicles the shifting allegiances within the crime families and underworld organizations of post-WWII Japan. The landmark film is based on a series of newspaper articles published by a yakuza-turned-journalist, and was adapted for the screen by director Kinji Fukusaku. Tonight's screening marks the conclusion of the Asia Society's series Gamblers, Gangsters, and Other Anti-Heroes and is followed by a discussion with curator and acclaimed author Ian Buruma.
