There's something classic about Salt & Samovar, and it's not just the old-timey lettering they use on handbills and album covers. Their music evokes a rousing Dust Bowl revival tent, or the pathos of a Depression-era hobo or sideshow veteran. The Brooklyn foursome also gamely interprets the country-folk and rockabilly of more recent touchstones like Bob Dylan, the Band, and Chuck Berry; and while they've only been performing together since 2006, S&S emanate ease both onstage and on their recent debut, Old Joy, New Joy — a quality KCRW heavyweight Nic Harcourt no doubt had in mind when he placed the record third in his top-ten 2007 albums.
