Best described as a Penguin Café Orchestra for the iPod generation, the Cinematic Orchestra's elegant compositions combine traditional instrumentation (saxophone, piano, bass) with turntablism and sampling. Sounding like a soulful, jazzy version of new-school synth-fiends Air (or a modernized, de-souled version of the original, avant-jazz act of the same name), the group uses studio magic to complement soaring vocals. Nina Simone sound-alike Fontella Bass' voice rings and warbles, while Canadian singer-songwriter Patrick Watson's beautifully mournful pipes recall the teary-eyed warbling of Antony and the Johnsons' Antony Hegarty.
