Performing Arts: Theatre Birthright

Jackie Alexander's Birthright is a startlingly realistic story about an African-American family in post-Katrina Louisiana. Set in 2006, the play investigates themes of unemployment, incest, modern Christianity, gender roles, and, most importantly, memory, inviting the audience to experience the economic and emotional effects of the infamous hurricane. Blackouts separate each scene, upping the suspense as the Thomas and Boudreaux clans unravel. The sound of endless rain serves as an effective counterpoint to Birthright's central conflict: the difficulty of rebuilding a family when hardships keep multiplying.
