The Met's new production of Donizetti's La Fille du Régiment is an exceptional reason to journey uptown. An everyman epic full of love and war, La Fille mocks upper-class snobbery and stuffy conservatism. It's fun to side with the rough-edged daughter as she's judged by the hobbling, exquisitely dressed aristocrats (while noting that the bulk of the Met's audience is recognizing itself on stage, and is forced to laugh at the critique). So drink bubbly out of plastic flutes and listen in awe to the soprano and her tenor at one of NYC's most venerable cultural institutions.
