Performing Arts: Dance National Dance Theatre Company of Jamaica

Rex Nettleford is the director of the National Dance Theatre Company of Jamaica. He's also an Oxford Rhodes Scholar, a Vice Chancellor Emeritus of the University of the West Indies, a respected historian of Jamaica's Rastafarian movement — and he still finds time to choreograph. Since its inception in 1962 (the year of Jamaican independence), Nettleford's company has merged traditional ballet, storytelling, pantomime, and politics into an evocative dance experience. The company's new piece examines Hurricane Katrina's effects on the African-American community. Politics share the stage with ritual as the NDTC performs the works of Nettleford and his team of Haitian, Cuban, and Jamaican choreographers.
