Reading: Poetry The Poet's Theatre II: Gilgamesh

Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Yusef Komunyakaa and Inverse Theater founder Chad Gracia give The Epic of Gilgamesh a thoroughly modern update. Written on stone tablets centuries before the Old Testament was fully recorded, Gilgamesh features an epic flood, shepherds of mysterious birth, jealous deities, and other characters and stories that conspicuously influenced Judeo-Christian mythology. Although the Sumerian saga is one of the oldest surviving works of literature, Komunyakaa and Gracia adapt the tale of the legendary King Gilgamesh's search for immortality with contemporary flair.
