Performing Arts: Theatre The Sound and The Fury (April Seventh, 1928)

Elevator Repair Service's inventive adaptation of the opening chapter of The Sound and the Fury delivers the soul of Faulkner's novel without summarizing or paraphrasing. Under the direction of John Collins (longtime sound designer for the Wooster Group), the intuitive logic of Faulkner's experimental, nonlinear text is conveyed through fluid shifts in casting and playful use of props and scenery. Seen through the eyes of Benjy Compson (Susie Sokol), the mentally challenged protagonist, the pedestrian reality of life in the Compson household is heightened, illogical, and bewildering — and the ensemble production follows suit, incorporating dense language, boisterous dance numbers, articulate physical acting, and a lush score.
