Without newlyweds or a bus-load of septuagenarians, photographs of "picture-perfect" places like the Taj Mahal, Niagara Falls, and Cinderella's Castle are just postcards — it's the traveler that makes the scene memorable. Tseng Kwong Chi's travel portraits at David Kasmin Gallery span a decade, but the artist — consistently dressed in a Maoist uniform in every frame — might as well have taken the series over the course of a single day. The great American vacation, stripped of its particulars, breaks down into a tour of self-effacement suffused with a good-humored fear of the Iron Curtain falling on America.
