Film The Saragossa Manuscript (1968)

The Saragossa Manuscript is a labyrinthine film that plays like a Napoleonic-era Arabian Nights. Based on a novel, the film follows a soldier who discovers a mysterious manuscript of his grandfather's military travels; with time, the journal unravels into a multi-layered web of intertwined stories. Set in an exoticized version of 18th-century Spain, this surreal, disorienting adventure features a motley crew of cabalists, gypsies, religious zealots, and princesses — and, it should be noted, is Luis Buñuel's favorite film. This restored, subtitled version was jointly financed by Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese, and Jerry Garcia in the '90s.
