Armando Lerma and Carlos Ramirez — collectively known as the multimedia-art team the Date Farmers — mash up art history with Southern California's multi-ethnic culture, folk art, advertising graphics, and a wry sense of humor. The results are witty, alluring paintings and collages featuring mottled surfaces, crisply flowing lines, and expressive text-based elements. Their mixed-media constructions feature juicy, recontextualized gems of found objects and materials, from Cracker Jacks boxes to pornography, brand logos to religious symbols — all juxtaposed in the service of deeply pleasurable (and insightful) visuals.
