Music: Classical Pro Musica Hebraica Concert

The Jewish Folk Music Society was founded 100 years ago in St. Petersburg (Russia, not Florida), providing many of tonight's featured composers with an opportunity to hear their work performed — that is, before Stalinism closed the Society's doors. The Biava Quartet join Juilliard chamber musicians in performance of this seldom-heard music, which posited a sense of Jewish nationalism in the days before modern Israel. Presenter Pro Musica Hebraica preserves Jewish classical music structures and guides this inaugural concert — a preview of the main event in Washington, DC.

– Peter Stepek
