- Dirty Projectors
One of the few experimental bands that are actually pleasing to the ears, Dirty Projectors combine dizzying, scooped-out harmonies with choppy guitars. Led by headstrong eccentric Dave Longstreth, the group has churned out five albums in only four years, each conceptually driven, if not a tad obtuse. The latest, Rise Above, is a track-by-track tribute to Damaged, the seminal album by '80s hardcore band Black Flag. While this reinterpretation bears little resemblance to the original, somehow BF frontman Henry Rollins' diatribes on corrupt cops and the simple pleasures of a six-pack sound perfectly at home filtered through Longstreth's careening whimsy.
