Art From Another Shore: Recent Icelandic Art

Beyond Vikings, black metal, and squealing, elvish pop stars, Iceland has a rich cultural terrain that Americans are slowly exploring. Scandinavia House hosts work by 20 of the nation's most renowned artists — including Ólafur Elíasson, whose solo exhibition is running simultaneously at MoMA — beginning tonight with a talk featuring several contributors. Many pieces here evoke the outdoors: The Icelandic Love Corporation sculpts birds constructing a nest out of plastic tubing and an old tire, Magnús Sigurðarson's Stormur á stöpli traps a blizzard in a Plexiglas container, and Ólöf Nordal complements dual projections with giant pink beanbags in Hanaegg.
