Performing Arts: Theatre Les Liaisons Dangereuses

Christopher Hampton's stage adaptation of Les Liaisons Dangereuses befitted the greed and self-absorption that characterized the '80s. The play, and its subsequent film adaptation, hit a nerve with uncompromising depictions of cruelty and deception in matters of the heart. Unsurprisingly, during the current times of financial uncertainty and hyper-vanity, the play's message rings true once again. Director Rufus Norris' straightforward adaptation prods the audience to root for its calculating characters by allowing them to appear human, and even, somehow, sympathetic. Laura Linney can be a tad too mild-mannered for the role Glenn Close immortalized on the silver screen, but British stage star Ben Daniels is a revelation.
