Performing Arts: Dance New York City Ballet: Bernstein Collaborations

NYCB's season-long tribute to choreographer Jerome Robbins continues with an all-Robbins/Leonard Bernstein program — the work of lifelong friends and occasional enemies who would have both turned 90 this year. The evening opens with the pair's first joint effort, Fancy Free, a one-act charmer from 1944 about three sailors on shore leave. Thirty years later, the two created their last ballet together, the lesser-known but fascinating Dybbuk; two seasons ago, the interpretation of a Yiddish legend of love lost and regained returned to NYCB's repertory after a prolonged absence. The evening closes with West Side Story Suite, Robbins' truncated 1995 version of his and Bernstein's most famous work, in which the multitalented dancers more than hold their own singing "America," "Cool," and "Somewhere."
