Art Purvis Young: Protest

After encountering the works of van Gogh and Rembrandt in a prison library, Purvis Young went back to his cell and had a dream, wherein a few kindly angels persuaded him to stop participating in the rough-and-tumble way of life that dominates Overtown, Florida, where he grew up. So Young changed his ways and taught himself how to paint. Four decades later, his work is highly prized by outsider-art enthusiasts worldwide. His immediate, coarsely framed pieces are composed from sloppy geometry and feature a rotating stable of motifs, idioms, and characters — many of which are drawn from Overtown, where Young still resides.
