Art Christian Vincent: Runyon Canyon

The realist vignettes of Christian Vincent's Runyon Canyon are akin to the character sketches in Spoon River Anthology — they seem to be parts of a larger narrative that we can only glimpse. The works in the exhibition show Vincent's penchant for patterns, carefully rendered perspective, and stiff, weighty figures reminiscent of Balthus' strange models, with cats and parrots in their laps, and puppies and serpents on their shoulders. His subjects could be castaways from an earlier age — except that their faces reveal a disquieting confrontation with modern times.
