France's student riots of May 1968 are now a widely mythologized example of late-60s' turbulence and strife. Jean-Luc Godard captures the period of passion and naïveté leading up to the riots in this tribute to youthful ignorance, La Chinoise. The film mimics Dostoyevsky's 1872 novel The Possessed, by following the activities and interactions of five members of a radical Maoist groupuscule in Paris. Godard cuts the solemnity of the story and its context with incisive humor that's at once satirical and sympathetic.
