Sol LeWitt at Storm King

In the laboratory of conceptual art, Sol LeWitt is the mad scientist. Engineered from instructions, his hard-lined geometric sculptures are austere, but the scribbled preparatory notes that spawned them reveal the obsessions of a kook. In 1974's whimsically titled series Incomplete Open Cubes, for instance, LeWitt scratched out every possible iteration (122 in all) of a cube missing one or more of its sides. Storm King — with a permanent collection of sculpture well worth the hour's drive from Manhattan — displays three examples from this series alongside LeWitt's signature work Five Modular Units, which cuts a striking white contrast against the sculpture park's scenery, like a jungle gym in a galaxy far, far away.

Note: The grounds remain open until 8pm on Saturdays through August 30. Starting Sunday, November 2, Storm King closes at 5pm.
