More Flavor: Tribute

Let's Go Swimming: A Tribute to Arthur Russell

Among the many giants of the downtown avant-garde, Arthur Russell stands apart. The cellist, composer, singer, and left-field disco producer ("Kiss Me Again," which features David Byrne on guitar, was the first disco single released on Sire Records) got down with everyone from Philip Glass and Allen Ginsberg to David Mancuso and Larry Levan. For three nights, the Kitchen hosts a tribute to its former director, featuring the NYC debut of Matt Wolf's Wild Combination, a portrait of Russell's life from his teenage years in Iowa until his death from AIDS in 1992. On Friday and Saturday, a slew of musicians perform Russell's songs and instrumental works.
