Francisco de Goya: Los Desastres de la Guerra

Just before producing his modern masterpieces, dubbed the Black Paintings, Goya vented his disgust with the human animal in a series of small etchings titled Los Desastres de la Guerra. Recalling Matthew Brady's Civil War photographs, or perhaps a photo essay from Fallujah, these minuscule pieces depict Spain's bloody fight against the Napoleon-led French invasion. Their size and details invite close inspection, even if the subjects are repellent: in one instance, a woman clutches a baby in one arm while spearing a man with the other. Next to it, as if to head off the fatigue of repetition, an image of a heap of bodies is simply titled Lo Mismo, which means "the same thing."
