What sets the Brooklyn-based Hold Steady apart from other indie "bar bands" who like their guitars thick and ballads beer-drenched, is the delivery and wordplay of live wire/singer Craig Finn. Laying down lyrics with a slacker drawl that can turn into a verbal torrent, Finn rambles off stories of heartbreak and redemption. On their last album, Boys and Girls in America, the Hold Steady brought the young and wayward characters of its songs alive with a bigger sound that had critics crying Springsteen. While these boys have already "broken" in a big way, they appropriately cap a bill of hard-working upstart acts at tonight's Tribeca Film Fest Breaking the Band showcase.
