Art: Photography Eminent Domain: Contemporary Photography and the City
When, in 2007, the New York City government considered requiring permits to photograph in public, officials were met with cries of heresy from legions of New York street photographers. Taking this conflict as inspiration, Eminent Domain: Contemporary Photography and the City surveys the images of five working photographers who each take unique approaches to documenting our fair lady — thankfully, without the inconvenience of permits. In The Lams of Ludlow, Thomas Holton looks inward, documenting the lives of an immigrant family living in Chinatown, while Bettina Johae, pushing outward, maps the peripheries of the five boroughs. And, connecting it all, Ethan Levitas photographs New York's lifeline: the subway.
