Film The Edge of Heaven

Fatih Akin's last feature, the much-touted Head-On (2004), packed a punch so punk rock that it injected raw adrenaline directly into your system. His latest, The Edge of Heaven, takes on some of the same topics — the interplay between Turkey and Western Europe; the human need and fear of intimacy — from a more nuanced, nonlinear place. The interlocking stories of three parents and their adult children drift through a haze of ideological and international clashes, as well as governmental bureaucracy. If this film falls prey to the staginess that plagues nearly all ensemble films, a narrative tension emerges that happily matches the voltage of Head-On's less-restrained fury.
