Performing Arts: Dance DanceAfrica 2008

BAM's annual DanceAfrica festival is a beloved Memorial Day blowout that brings together traditional dance, film, and art, as well as an outdoor bazaar brimming with fabrics, fashions, local crafts, and foods charting a culinary map of the African diaspora. Artistic Director Chuck Davis — the 2008 recipient of the prestigious Capezio Dance Award — hosts the fest, which celebrates the 125th anniversary of the Brooklyn Bridge with the theme "Bridge to Cultural Rejuvenation & Enlightenment." Three leading dance companies — from Atlanta, Harlem, and Gambia — make the trip to Fort Greene to share the BAM Opera House stage with DanceAfrica's resident Bedford-Stuyvesant youth company for five spirited performances.
