In The Children of Huang Shi, the true story of how journalist George Hogg (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) and medic Lee Pearson (Radha Mitchell) saved Chinese orphans during the 1937-1938 Japanese invasion is cast against cinematographer Zhao Xiaoding's extraordinary, looming landscapes. Director Roger Spottiswoode approached his last project, the Rwanda genocide drama Shake Hands with the Devil, from a similar outsider perspective, also emphasizing Westerners saving the non-Westerners. But in this film, the characters are less finely drawn and subsequently less aggrandized, solving the tricky problem of how to depict humanitarianism without fetishizing the humans themselves.
